Dining Room by Craigslist

Nixa, Missouri is about three hours from Kansas City. I tell you that because six or seven years ago I sent Tom an email asking: “If I wanted to buy a pine hutch I saw on Craigslist, and it was in Nixa, MO, could we find a way to get it home?”

Luckily, Tom is a good sport so he said yes, we could figure out a way. He ended up renting a cargo van and we drove to Nixa to look at a hutch I had only seen in pictures.

I loved it, and the hutch was the first piece of a dining room makeover that came together mostly courtesy of Craigslist.

The same weekend that we brought home the hutch, I found a pine table on CL, this time much closer to home.

And not long after that, I bought some cherry Queen Anne chairs off CL and Tom helped me spray paint them black and recover the seats. We are not DIYers, so the fact that these turned out was a big deal.

The rest of the room came together courtesy of my mom (the tray table), Pottery Barn (the chandelier), Ballard Designs (the parsons chairs), Etsy (the toile pillows) and a garage sale (the plant stand).

But it all started with that hutch in Nixa. Tom likes to say that he enjoyed that particular adventure. I think I even believe him.

Great pictures, – but I still LOVE the chandelier!

  2. Julie, I love the hutch! I would have driven a few hours to get it, too. My experience has been it definitely helps to see furniture up close and personal before purchasing. Everything in your dining room looks lovely!

    1. Thank you, Jillian. We were definitely ready to drive home empty-handed if need be. Glad we didn’t have to.

Hi Julie, your dining room IS lovely. One of my favorite memories is sitting around the table chatting after Mother-Son Dance when the boys were seniors. I never knew you spray painted the chairs! I am nervously getting ready to spray paint our kitchen set for Ali to bring to her new apartment. Do you remember what kind of spray paint you used and what finish; gloss, semi-gloss or satin?

    1. Hi Carol Lynn! It’s been so long since I painted them that I don’t remember what kind of spray paint I used, but it wasn’t anything special. I did use a liquid sander/degreaser (any hardware store will have it) on them before spraying them. Good luck!

  4. Wow, a true gold mine finding those chairs and hutch on CL! They look wonderful. You did a great job with your dining room.

    XO,
    Christine

  5. That hutch is wonderful- love the details. The table and black chairs look wonderful together. The black tray table and other touches of black bring this all together very nicely!
