Three Books about Living with and Decorating with Books

I’ve made no secret that I think books add soul to a home. A house with books tells you something about the people that live there. Not just that they are readers or book lovers, but the books on their shelves tell you what they’re interested in as well.

With that in mind, here are three coffee table books about living with books, displaying books, and decorating with books. In other words, books about books. These books can help you add books to your home in an interesting way, and the books themselves look great on your bookshelves or coffee table at the same time.

Bibliostyle: How We Live at Home with Books by Nina Freudenberger. When I noticed this book was almost 50% off at Amazon (a pre-Prime Day sale?) I grabbed it. Written by an interior designer and a New Yorker writer with pictures by an Architectural Digest photographer, it’s just stunning. I especially love that we get a look at the personal bookshelves of writers, bookstore owners, and other bookish people.

Books Make A Home: Elegant Ideas for Storing and Displaying Books by Damian Thompson. Another deeply discounted book from Amazon right now, Books Make a Home has chapters for displaying books in the different rooms in your homes: living rooms, libraries and studies, dining rooms (you know we love a dining room/library combination), kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, children’s rooms, and stairs and corridors. From the publisher: Books Make a Home is an insightful guide to enjoying books with the eye as well as with the mind.”

House Beautiful’s Decorating with Books by Marie Proeller Hueston. This 2006 book is still in print, which isn’t surprising as decorating with books is a classic and timeless proposition. This book isn’t discounted at Amazon right now, but you can order it used, which I did (there are many copies, some under $6). An Amazon reviewer put it this way: “If you like reading…you have a love for books…and feel a room is empty without them, this is the book for you.”

P.S. What gives a house soul and classic home design books.
